Rally For Awareness

Rallies have long been a peaceful, impactful way to bring awareness to a particular issue or concern. This was put into action by the Junior League of San Diego as a way to raise awareness about the horrific problem of human trafficking. The march traversed through the streets of San Diego beginning at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street in Balboa Park.

The March Accomplished More Than Awareness

In addition to bringing awareness to the issue of human trafficking as it is impacting San Diego, experts participating in the march also taught participants in the crowd how to recognize even subtle signs of a person being held against their will as a slave. There were also other aspects of human trafficking discussed for the further education of all involved.  Rachel Scatizzi Thompson, President of the Junior League of San Diego said the following about the event and the importance of the event and the need to continue to bring awareness to the issue:

“Human trafficking affects men, women and children in San Diego at a rate that shocks many residents. At this rally, we’ll offer a glimpse into the stories of victims and empower the participants with the knowledge they need to take a stand against this problem that remains hidden all too often.”

Speakers at the march include Assembly member Brian Maienschein, District Attorney Summer Stephan, executive director of Saved in America Joseph Travers and attorney Jamie Quient.

Shocking Facts About Human Trafficking in San Diego

The FBI currently lists San Diego as one of the top 13 highest sex trafficking areas throughout the nation. According to a 2016 Point Loma Nazarene University/University of San Diego study, 90% of the 20 San Diego high schools researched said that sex trafficking had happened at their schools. Human trafficking is currently second only to drug trafficking among the largest underground economies.

Awareness of Human Trafficking is Important

Being aware of the problem as it relates to human trafficking is the first step towards fighting against the insurgence of this significant problem. It is shocking to most people just how prevalent human trafficking is within America’s borders. Many assume this is a global problem that only affects third-world nations. However, it is most certainly a problem within America’s borders, a fact that was highlighted through this rally.
