VC Chamber Part II

In this second part of the informative chat with the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce, our own Joseph Travers of Saved in America further explains the problem with sex trafficking in San Diego and how it has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The Beginning of Saved in America 

Our organization first took to the streets in an effort to rescue victimized and exploited children in 2014. Since that date, the numbers had improved, at least until COVID-19. Unfortunately, another unwelcome side effect of the global pandemic is a much more connected populace. This means that there are kids now who are spending hours of their day online completing homework and school assignments that prior to the COVID-19 shutdowns would not have spent this time online. The predators are having a field day with this as it has put innocent children right in their wheelhouse so to speak. It’s in essence placing the prey in the perfect location and situation for these predators to easily attack.  

What Can Be Done From a Parents’ Perspective?

There is no way to prevent a child from spending time online, especially when they are having to use those avenues for school work. What parents can do, though, is keep an open line of communication going, so they always know what their kids are doing and who they are talking to while spending time online. Keep in mind these predators are highly skilled. They know how to make a child open up to them, trust them, and they can even slowly make them turn their back on their family through the process of grooming. Therefore, it’s imperative that parents stay informed about their kids’ online activity and don’t feel they are overstepping their boundaries by asking questions. Questions can save lives. 

What Can The Public Do to Help Out?

The COVID-19 shutdowns have proven profitable for the predators who have taken advantage of the many kids now thrust online. Aside from being vigilant as a parent and finding out what your kids are doing online, the public can help Saved in America by giving to their organization. No parent or family is ever charged for Saved in America services. Instead, this organization is supported by donations and volunteer efforts.
