Trafficking Awareness

Human Trafficking Awareness Month is a somber yet crucial reminder of the challenges facing our communities in combating the heinous crime of trafficking. In the United States, trafficking of children remains a tragic reality, devastating families and communities while perpetuating cycles of harm. Saved in America plays a pivotal role in prevention and recovery, saving lives in more ways than one. Listen to our Founder, Joseph Travers explain the devastating reality occurring in our very own communities.

The Stark Reality of Child Sex Trafficking in the United States

  • Prevalence: Each year, an estimated 200,000 children in the U.S. are at risk of being trafficked. Many of these children are runaway youth, victims of abuse, or individuals from vulnerable backgrounds.

  • Runaways and Trafficking: According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, one in six runaways reported to them in 2023 was likely a victim of child sex trafficking.

  • Impact on Communities: Traffickers often exploit poverty, homelessness, and familial instability. Communities with high economic disparity or systemic neglect are hotspots for recruitment and exploitation.

The Ripple Effect: Families, Communities, and Health

The consequences of child trafficking extend beyond the immediate victim, affecting families and communities in profound ways:

  1. Family Devastation: Families of missing children experience immense trauma, uncertainty, and despair. Siblings, parents, and extended relatives often grapple with guilt and helplessness, compounding the emotional toll.

  2. Public Health Risks: Trafficked children face increased risks of sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies, and severe mental health challenges, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

  3. Community Vulnerability: Trafficking corrodes community safety and trust. It thrives in environments with insufficient prevention resources, creating cycles of exploitation and harm.

Saved in America's Mission: A Beacon of Hope

Saved in America (SIA) stands at the frontline of this crisis, providing an essential service: locating missing and exploited children and reuniting them with their families. But SIA’s mission goes beyond recovery; it also actively prevents devastating outcomes like abortion, teen pregnancy, death, and disease.

How We Prevent the Worst Outcomes:

  • Preventing Teen Pregnancy and Abortion: Trafficked youth often endure sexual exploitation, leading to unplanned pregnancies. By rescuing these children and connecting them to supportive services, SIA interrupts this cycle, giving them a chance to heal without facing the life-altering consequences of teen pregnancy.

  • Protecting Lives: The dangerous environments trafficked children endure often result in death through violence, malnutrition, or suicide. Each child saved by SIA is a life preserved and a future reclaimed.

  • Stopping the Spread of Disease: Many trafficked children are forced into situations where they contract sexually transmitted infections or other health complications. By recovering them and connecting them to medical care, SIA mitigates these long-term health risks.

The Power of Awareness and Action

Human Trafficking Awareness Month reminds us of the power of collective action. Communities can combat trafficking by:

  • Educating Others: Share the facts about trafficking to break misconceptions and encourage vigilance.

  • Supporting Organizations: Volunteer or donate to groups like Saved in America, which actively recover children and fight against trafficking.

  • Advocating for Policy Changes: Push for stronger anti-trafficking laws and support systems for survivors.
