Three Strikes
The state of California has rampant numbers of human trafficking victims. This is unfortunate as there is nothing more degrading to endure as a victim than this crime. It takes away a person’s dignity, their self-worth and makes them feel as if they have no choice but to remain a victim of this heinous industry. The physical and emotional trauma can leave a lasting impact on victims, affecting them for years to come if not their entire lives. Thankfully, some policymakers are trying to make it harder for those who victimize people in such a way to find legal leniency.
Bipartisan Bill
The proposed Bill, Senate Bill 14 is a bipartisan measure that is a common-sense change that needs to be enacted. It makes human trafficking of minors punishable under the California three strikes law as a serious felony. In other words, this would make the crime of human trafficking similar in the eyes of the law and how it can be prosecuted to crimes like carjacking, rape, arson, and even murder. An explanation of the law is listed below:
“SB 14 will help strengthen protections for the thousands of minor victims who are sex trafficked and will serve as a deterrent for those who engage in this horrendous crime.”
Saved in America and Prosection
Saved in America works on behalf of families to find missing girls who are victimized by the human trafficking industry. However, their work doesn’t end there. They also help find rehabilitation and safe living spaces for victims as well as help their families obtain justice through the legal system. Thankfully, measures like this bill make that whole process easier as predators are likely to think harder about a crime if they know it will be prosecuted so severely.
Putting Predators Behind Bars
Thankfully, legislation like this bill makes it easier for the good guys to succeed when seeking punishment for these predators. This bill and others like it will make each offense more severe and hopefully turn the tide in a positive direction towards reducing the amount of human trafficking numbers that are happening. Of course, rescuing the victims from this situation as well as ensuring they get the help they need to overcome their ordeal is also vital to them living a healthy, happy life post-human trafficking.
