Truck Drivers

While bad news travels fast, we at Saved in America believe that good news also deserves a bit of notoriety. This piece of good news posted by MSN is just the piece to share to highlight the good that still exists in today’s world. Women truckers from southwestern Ontario are using their platform and their trucks to raise awareness for human trafficking and share an important message that could save lives.

Truck With a Message

Many advocates gathered together outside of Ontario Truck Driving School recently to see the unveiling of a rig wrapped with a message. It is a message created by the Know Human Trafficking campaign. These trucks will then be driven around the area by students who are learning to drive, making them visible in both rural and urban communities in the area. According to Shelley Walker who is the founder of the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada, which is the organization behind this trucking campaign, the following is why her group is committed to fighting back against the horrors of human trafficking:

“Human trafficking is on the rise here in Ontario, especially along the 401 corridor. The numbers are very high, so we need to be educated to solve it.”

The Message

The message that is displayed on these trucks that will be driven all over the area state “Know human trafficking, know how to spot it, and together we can stop it.” It also includes a diagram of the hand signal for help that shows the thumb tucked out, then in, and four fingers held together in a fist. The trucking industry— in addition to being ideal for showcasing a message— is an important industry to ensure has an understanding of what to look for relating to human trafficking.

Truck stops, and rest areas are perfect places to look for human trafficking victims, many of whom can be spotted if those around know the signs and signals to look for, such as the hand signal displayed on the trucks. This rolling billboard is a great step in the right direction of rescuing kids from human trafficking as well as educating the public in general on the signs to look for and what to do if they witness a human trafficking victim. We at Saved in America applaud our neighbors to the north as they seek to grow this needed campaign.
