Sextortion
Technology has consistently played a big role in modern human trafficking. However, as of late, it seems it has begun to play an even bigger role at least as it relates to sextortion. This word is basically what happens when predators use telemarketing centers within third-world countries to access videos or pictures of American kids in compromising situations. They obtain these pictures and then blackmail youths for money in a new scheme that relates to human trafficking. According to the leader of One Million Kids and coordinator of Riverside County Anti-Human-Trafficking Task Force, the following is how these evil worlds correlate:
“I believe that sextortion is the super highway for future sex trafficking victims. A lot of society does not understand the impact that happens when a child is violated through social media exploitation. I’m going to tell you the crime of sextortion will impact a child for the rest of their life. It will change who they believe they are.”
What Can Be Done?
Thankfully, there is hope in the form of concerned and educated parents. Lompoc, California residents were able to attend a recent forum that educated them about human trafficking and sexual extortion, also known as sextortion as well as other forms of exploitation. The three-hour event taught participants what to look for when it comes to this new way of exploitation. Executive director of North County Rape Crisis and Child Protection Ann McCarty explains, “Education is key to prevention. As adults, we should always be working to up our game because the predators are upping their game every day.”
Lt. Chip Arias, who is employed by Lompoc Police Department, also shared his thoughts on the forum and the educational aspect of the event, “Talk to people. That is the best way to help educate others.”
Predators Seek Vulnerable Victims
While sex trafficking can victimize any type of person from any background, it is most prevalent when kids are homeless or in foster care as they don’t have an advocate looking out for them. However, when parents are involved, they can educate themselves on what to look for and begin being nosy when it comes to their kids and what they are doing online. Saved in America agrees that when parents are involved and know what is going on, this is one of the best protections against the horrors of the industry.
